XenoHelix CEO Sung-Wook Yang Outlines Vision to Launch World’s First miRNA-Based Parkinson’s Diagnostic Product
XenoHelix CEO Sung-Wook Yang Outlines Launch of World’s First MicroRNA-Based Parkinson’s Diagnostic Product
In an interview on December 4, 2024, Sung-Wook Yang, CEO of XenoHelix, announced the company's strategic roadmap to introduce the world’s first product designed to diagnose Parkinson’s disease through the analysis of microRNA (miRNA) in human blood.
"While the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has recently re-illuminated the immense clinical value of miRNA, no diagnostic methods utilizing it have been commercialized yet," said CEO Yang. "We plan to supply our proprietary miRNA isolation, purification, and detection platform technology to molecular diagnostics and liquid biopsy companies, while actively pursuing global technology licensing."
miRNA interacts with messenger RNA (mRNA) to suppress or regulate the expression of specific genes, playing a critical role in disease development. By precisely tracking and analyzing miRNA expression, researchers can unlock new avenues for disease diagnosis and targeted drug development.
At the core of XenoHelix’s innovation is its proprietary ‘Xeno-Q’ platform, a cutting-edge technology capable of identifying high-purity, high-efficiency miRNA from ultra-low volumes of blood in under an hour. The streamlined process operates in three distinct phases: anchoring an independently developed nanosensor to the target miRNA for detection, and directly amplifying the resulting sensor-miRNA complex. "This sets us apart from existing commercial miRNA detection kits, which typically require five to eight steps and take three to four hours to complete," CEO Yang explained.
Leveraging this technological breakthrough, XenoHelix has focused on developing diagnostic products for both Parkinson's disease and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). The company aimed to finalize its ongoing confirmatory clinical trials and roll out its highly anticipated Parkinson's diagnostic product to the market in the following year.
Concurrently, XenoHelix has expanded into the healthcare materials sector by capitalizing on exosomes, where miRNA serves as a core active ingredient. Having successfully finalized technologies to extract, isolate, and purify exosomes—as well as efficiently separate miRNA from within them—the company has already launched high-performance cosmetic functional materials.
"Moving forward, revenue from these advanced functional materials, combined with our growing molecular diagnostic reagent sales, will serve as a powerful dual engine to drive the company's financial growth," added CEO Yang.
